The "Montagnards", autochtonous people of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The term "Montagnards" (Highlanders) describes the ethnic minorities of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The integration of this region with Vietnam and the vicissitudes of its history have jeopardised the Montagnards' physical and cultural environment. Colonisation, independence wars, internal migrations, and various policies aiming at their assimilation have threatened the survival of these peoples. At the same time, massive spraying of defoliants by the United States Army, the over exploitation of natural resources and agricultural expansion have greatly reduced the surface occupied by the tropical forests and endangered the Montagnards' way of life and their outstanding adaptation to an environment which is both hostile and delicate.

Sous le terme de "Montagnards" on rassemble les nombreuses ethnies minoritaires des hauts plateaux du Centre du Vietnam. L'intégration de cette région au Vietnam et les vicissitudes de l'histoire ont contribué à mettre en péril, les environnements physique et culturel de ces populations. A la suite de la colonisation, des guerres d'indépendance, des migrations internes et des diverses politiques d'assimilation, elles sont menacées dans leur existence. Parallèlement, l'épandage massif de défoliants opéré par l'armée américaine, la surexploitation des ressources naturelles et l'avancée du front pionnier vietnamien ont considérablement réduit la surface occupée par la forêt tropicale et remis en question le genre de vie et l'extraordinaire adaptation des Montagnards à un environnement à la fois hostile et délicat.
