This study addresses the question of the so-called “Protestant strain” in Derek Mahon’s poetry. Firstly, a linguistic approach tries to account for the fact that the notion of “Protestantism” is a linguistic construct. The analysis focuses on the aspectual properties of some of the utterances, the interpretation of modalities and the function of negation, as well as the relevance of some lexical choices. The second part argues for the necessity of distinguishing between poetic metaphors and Protestant emblems. It calls into question the existence of the concept of “Protestant culture” to suggest instead the possibility of a poetry expressing a specific point of view rooted in a Protestant perception of things and environment.

Cet article, fondé sur une étude de quelques poèmes de Derek Mahon, vise à cerner la question du protestantisme dans l’écriture de Derek mahon. L’analyse linguistique de certains marqueurs de détermination aspectuelle et modal, de la négation, et de leur interaction avec les choix lexicaux, tente d’abord de rendre compte de la façon dont la notion est construite dans la langue par l’intermédiaire d’un point de vue. La seconde approche s’attache pour sa part à montrer en quoi la perception et l’écriture sont tributaires de représentations culturelles préexistantes, que les poèmes de Derek Mahon portent jusqu’à un point de saturation où l’image se fait emblème. Ces deux analyses convergent dans la détermination d’un seuil de reconnaissance que la poésie de Derek Mahon s’ingénie à mettre en évidence pour mieux s’en démarquer.
