All of Britain’s former colonies in the Pacific joined the Commonwealth at independence in the 1970s and 1980s, while in Australia and New Zealand, which had belonged to the very first Commonwealth of white Dominions, ties with a British world and identity remained strong for a very long time. In the post-colonial period, the nations of the Pacific show rather insignificant relations with the United Kingdom, echoing the almost indifferent way in which Britain had pursued the colonisation of the region. Despite their historical legacy and even though most states in the region remain constitutionally linked to the Crown, the Commonwealth has now become one amongst many actors, far behind the new emerging powers.
