Résumé En

Muriel Brot : Raynal, novellist and political writer. The 8th book of the Histoire des Deux Indes owes much to Charlevoix's Histoire du Paraguay, and although the "tragic tale of a Spanish lady" is merely one of many borrowings, it was extensively rewritten in a way which emphasizes its novelistic character. In addition, although Raynal preserves Charlevoix's manichean perspective, he inverses the roles, rehabilitating the Indian, while the Spaniard (the victim in the original version) becomes a bloodthirsty barbarian whose methods of colonisation are both inhuman and politically inept. The literary base is both a satirical tool and a means of developing criticism of the Spanish — which until then had been only concerned with political and economic issues — to include humanitarian and ethical considerations.
