Discours ou métadiscours ?

There are types of utterances clearly recognizable as having a commentary function on discourse : commentary on the status of a term or of an expression or on its adequacy in the particular instance in which it appears ; commentary on the discourse utterance conditions, specially those securing its intelligibility ; commentary also on the discourse structuration. But these may be particular utterances with characteristic formal properties. It is not sure that metadiscourse phenomenon can be as a rule reduced to the expression of specific constructions distinguishable and separable from the discourse they refer to.

Dans le discours, certains énoncés apparaissent clairement comme remplissant une fonction de glose : glose sur le sens ou la construction d'un terme ou sur son adéquation dans la structure particulière où il apparait ; glose sur les conditions énonciatives du discours, en particulier celles qui assurent son intelligibilité ; glose enfin sur la manière dont s'élabore le discours. Mais peut-être s'agit-il là d'énoncés se désignant spécialement à l'attention par leurs propriétés de forme. Il n'est pas dit que le phénomène de métadiscours puisse d'une manière générale se ramener ainsi à l'expression d'énoncés spécifiques, distincts et séparables du discours auquel il est fait référence.
