An Analysis of the imperial successions during the Southern Dynasties (317-589). In any monarchic system, the question of succession is a fundamental issue. The laws of devolution often come out from cumulative precedents. In China, the fundamental rule, which appears in the Gongyang zhuan (Gongyang commentary on the Spring and Autumns annals), stipulate that the eldest son born by the principal wife succeeds his father. What is to be done, however, when the principal wife has no son, or when the eldest son is unable to reign or unworthy of the throne ? The article examines all the successions that took place during the five dynasties established in Nanking between 317 and 589 A. D. and discusses the special cases should the need arise. It appears that, contrary to what we could expect from a period reputed to be chaotic as far as politics were concerned, there were relatively less succession problems than under the Han dynasty. The period examined here marked probably a progress in the setting of the rules of devolution.
