The King among physicians in Dunhuang medical manuscripts : An Indian title in medieval China. The title “King among physicians” (yiwang 醫 王 ), which appears in Buddhist writings, is often associated with Jīvaka, the Buddha’s physician. In Dunhuang manuscripts, four versions of the Treatise of the Five Viscera by Zhang Zhongjing mention it. But the title does not appear in Chinese medical writings before the Tang dynasty. The present article discusses the origin and the meaning of this title in Dunhuang manuscripts as well as its use and evolution in other documents. It also describes the relationships between the medical cultures of ancient China and India.
