Du Begʷenā au Lāstā : centre et périphérie dans le royaume d’Éthiopie du XIIIe au XVIe siècle

From Begwena to Lasta centre and periphery in the ethiopian Kingdom from the 13rd to the 16th Century ; Lāstā maybe was the capital region of the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia during the reign of the Zāgwē dynasty. With the fall of this dynasty, the region totally lost its central position. So that until the 17th century its name is never mentioned in the royal chronicles. However recent publications on the churches of Lāstā and Angot point out that Lāstā was a political stake when Yekuno Amlak seized the power in the 13th century. The new king had to be seen and to impose himself there. From some unedited documents crossed with other historical texts, I will try to reconstruct the political history of this territory, called Begwenā or Lāstā, between the 13th and the 16th century. What was the name of the region before the 16th century ? What was the place of this territory in the political organization of the kingdom during this period ?

Le Lāstā était peut-être la région capitale du royaume chrétien d’Éthiopie durant le règne de la dynastie Zāgwē. Au moment de la chute de cette dynastie, la région a définitivement perdu sa position centrale. À tel point qu’au XVIIe siècle son nom n’apparaît plus dans les chroniques royales. Pourtant des publications récentes sur les églises du Lāstā et de l’Angot ont montré que le Lāstā était un enjeu politique pour le roi Yekuno Amlak, lorsqu’il s’empara du pouvoir à la fin du XIIIe siècle. Le nouveau roi devait se faire voir et s’imposer dans la région. À partir de documents inédits, croisés avec d’autres textes historiques, j’essaierai de reconstruire, dans cet article, l’histoire politique de ce territoire, appelé Begwenā ou Lāstā dans les sources, entre le XIIIe et le XVIe siècle. Quel était le nom de cette région avant le XVIe siècle ? Quelle était la place de ce territoire dans l’organisation politique du royaume durant cette période ?
