Legitimization of a Pretender to the Throne: A Short Amharic-French Biography of Hāyla Sellāsē I Published in 1930

This paper presents the edition of a short bilingual Amharic-French biography of Tafari/ Hāyla Sellāsē published in Ethiopia in 1930. This biography, published by the Ethiopian government, is a panegyric text aiming at presenting the life and the political actions of Tafari Makwannen until he became King of kings of Ethiopia, in a way, which shows the continuous and development of his career towards the highest levels of power. This text is one of the first examples of the official narrative on the legitimacy of Tafari as King of kings of Ethiopia. The historiographical aspect is extremely important and this text deserves publication. This paper aims at contributing to our knowledge and understanding of the creation of an official Ethiopian historiography in 20th century history. Because of its historiographical significance, the original text in Amharic is presented together with its original translation in French and a new translation in English, both with annotations. The English translation aims at presenting the characteristics of this text to non-French and non-Amharic speakers. The annotations highlight the work done by the French translator and offer a critical analysis of the contents of the text.

La construction de la légitimité d’un prétendant au trône : une courte biographie de Hāyla Sellāsē I publiée en 1930. Cet article propose l’édition d’une courte biographie de Tafari/ Hāyla Sellāsē écrite en amharique et en français, et publiée en 1930. Cette biographie, produite à l’époque par le gouvernement éthiopien, est un texte panégyrique ayant vocation à présenter la vie et l’action politique de Tafari Makwannen avant qu’il ne devienne roi des rois d’Éthiopie. Elle fait partie des premiers textes officiels visant à promouvoir la légitimité de Tafari en tant que roi des rois. Le caractère historiographique de ce texte est tel qu’il méritait une édition critique. Cet article vise ainsi à contribuer à nos connaissances et à notre compréhension de la création d’une historiographie officielle de l’histoire du XXe siècle en Éthiopie. En raison des importantes implications historiographiques de cette biographie, le texte en amharique est édité, sa traduction originale en français ainsi qu’une nouvelle traduction en anglais sont ici proposés et annotés. La nouvelle traduction en anglais a pour but de rendre accessible ce texte aux lecteurs ne maîtrisant pas l’amharique ou le français. Les annotations quant à elles permettent de comprendre le travail du traducteur en français de l’époque tout en offrant une approche critique des éléments présents dans le texte.
