Ulysses' journey to the edge of the world takes place in twelve stages. The poet of the Odyssey freely established the number and sequential order of these stages. He might even have invented some of them by rethinking tradition in an original way. The inscription of the twelve stages on a circle in their sequential order brings out the complex rhythmic structure of the narrative and, therefore, the logic of the Homeric arrangement of «Ulysses' nostos». The particulars of the episodes institute a network of analogies and oppositions happening between the stages. It is interesting to note that there is a correlation between the last six stages and the first six.
