Demeter “Nods” to Aphrodite? Narrative Interactions between the “Homeric” Hymn to Aphrodite and the Hymn to Demeter

This paper revisits the question of the relationship between two “ Homeric” hymns, the Hymn to Aphrodite and the Hymn to Demeter, from a narrative and thematic vantage point. The discussion focuses on narrative motifs and elements identifiable in both poems : Zeus in remote control of the action, female divinity in disguise, abduction tales, abduction of offspring, divine epiphanies, and others. The correspondences are extensive and may show interactive patterns and mechanisms. These features suggest that the Hymn to Demeter may have borrowed and adapted some narrative elements from the Hymn to Aphrodite. The subsoil for the interaction is identified in the concern of the two poems with the tension between mortal finitude and immortal infinity. Since none of the common narrative motifs and elements can determine in itself the question of dependence, the argument and case which is made is cumulative.

Les signes de Déméter à Aphrodite ? Interactions narratives entre l’Hymne homérique à Déméter et l’Hymne à Aphrodite. Cet article reprend la question de la relation entre deux hymnes dits homériques, l’Hymne à Aphrodite et l’Hymne à Déméter, sur un plan narratif et thématique. Le propos insiste sur les motifs narratifs et les éléments identifiables dans les deux poèmes : rôle de Zeus, déesses déguisées, enlèvements et disparitions, épiphanies divines, immortalité refusée et compensation, etc. Les correspondances sont nombreuses et peuvent montrer des schémas et des mécanismes d’interaction. Cela suggère que l’Hymne à Déméter peut avoir emprunté et adapté des éléments narratifs de l’Hymne à Aphrodite. Le substrat commun est le souci des deux textes de la tension entre finitude et immortalité. Même si aucun des éléments narratifs communs ne peut résoudre seul la question de l’interdépendance, les arguments discutés en démontrent la possibilité.
