This study draws up an account of the archaeological knowledge on the evolution of Avignon during the Antiquity. A close attention is given to the supposed connection between the urban features and the vicinity with the river, in matter of embankment, protection against floods or specific amenities. The active and repulsive nature of the Rhône doesn't obviously appear while the intention of developing building projects on the banks is clearly shown.

Cette étude expose les connaissances archéologiques acquises sur l'évolution d'Avignon durant l'Antiquité. Une attention particulière est portée sur les rapports supposés entre la physionomie urbaine et la proximité du fleuve, en matière de remblaiement, de protection contre les inondations ou d'aménagements spécifiques. Le caractère actif et répulsif du Rhône n'est pas mis en évidence, alors qu 'une volonté manifeste de monumentalisation des berges est clairement perçue.
