An overview of the marine Pliocene of N.E. Spain

The principal lithological, palaeoecological and biostratigraphical characteristics of the three marine basins of Catalonia (N.E. of Spain) are described. The primary differences between the three Pliocene basins are noted : the brackish-water nature of the Baix Ebre basin ; the marine nature of the Baix Llobregat and Empordà basins ; the great abundance of macrofauna in the Baix Llobregat basin and the diversity of faunal associations in Empordà basin. The age of all of these basins corresponds to the Lower Zanclean.

Aperçu sur le pliocène marin du N.E. de l'Espagne. On décrit les principales caractéristiques lithologiques, paléoécologiques aussi bien que biostratigraphiques des trois bassins du Pliocène de la Catalogne (N.E. de l'Espagne). Les différences les plus remarquables entre ces trois bassins sont les suivantes : la nature saumâtre du bassin du Bas-Ebre ; la richesse en macrofaune du Bas-Llobregat et la diversité d'associations faunistiques dans l'Empordà. L'âge de ces trois bassins correspond au Zancléen inférieur.
