The history of preschool education in Europe reveals the models that influenced the different creations and brings out the relative similarity of the different national chronologies, as well as the uselessness of a quest for origins. This history invites us to discern three kinds of creations: the spontaneous day nurseries, the two main institutional kinds of infant schools (the independent charity or philanthropic establishments on the one hand, the establishments created or supported by municipal, regional or national authorities on the other hand), and facilities set up within existing primary schools. This history also warns scholars against a twofold temptation consisting either in interpreting as progress any new institution or method, or in neglecting to assess the educational projects for the young children that reject the traditional model of schooling. While the history of each national system retains its interest, if only because it enables us to understand current national specificities, focusing on a particular area or establishment is also indispensable if one wants to go beyond the study of pedagogical theories to undertake a real social history of preschool education.
