: This paper presents an overall assessment of the whole range of research activities devoted to Natural-Language Processing within the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). After a quick survey of the social and economic conditions of research, the paper addresses itself to: i) the influence of language theories on AI research: neuropsy- chology, psychocognitive sciences, transformational grammars and case grammars; ii) the history of technical instruments and concepts, worked out during what may be described as a struggle between two basic trends: serialistic (Von Neumann) / parallelistic (connexionists, networks).

RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un panorama d'ensemble des activités de recherche consacrées au traitement du langage naturel en intelligence artificielle (LA). Après un rapide survol des conditions socio-économiques de ces recherches, l'article aborde: i) l'influence des théories langagières sur la recherche en IA, en particulier neuropsychologie, théorie psychocognitive, grammaires transformationnelles et grammaires de cas; ii) l'histoire des concepts et outils techniques, élaborés pendant ce qu'on peut caractériser comme une lutte entre deux grands courants, sérialiste (Von Neumann) / paralléliste (connexionnistes, réseaux).
