During the war of 1914-1918, writing had an nearly existential function in the life of every one, thus allowed to keep an identity and integrate the war into his own personnal world. We tried to pick up the trails of writing conditions and the way they changed in the wardiary of an "ordinary" soldier, the gunner JulesTalmon, by using the material- data griven by the text and by reconstituting the way it had been written. Untill the autumn of 1915, the writing and identification tools wich Jules Talmon had in his hands seem to allow him to integrate himself easily in the warprocess, but, after that period, the lengthening of the fights made the tools inadequate and induces him to reconstruct new ones inhis diary.

Au cours de la guerre de 1914-1918, l'écrit a joué un rôle quasiment existentiel dans la vie de chacun : il permettait de garder une identité et d'intégrer la guerre dans son univers personnel. Nous avons cherché les traces des conditions de l'écrit et de leurs transformations dans le journal de guerre d'un soldat « ordinaire », le canonnier Jules Talmon, en utilisant les données matérielles fournies par le texte et par la reconstitution de la façon dont il a été écrit. Jusqu'à l'automne 1915, les outils d'écriture et d'identification dont Jules Talmon dispose paraissent lui permettre de s'insérer aisément dans le processus de guerre, mais, après cette période, l'allongement de la durée des combats les rend désadaptés et le conduit à en reconstruire d'autres dans son journal.
