Statistical data represents one of the major sources of geographical discussion. China has a long tradition in this domain, but the statistics published are often unsatisfactory, in quantity as much as in quality. Firstly, this study snows that the Chinese territory has always been shrouded in secrecy in terms of statistics.The study then identifies the diverse factors related to the imprecision of statistics in China : the gigantic size of the territory and of the population, the transition process, the one-party system, and the geopolitical stakes. The third part details the statistical uncertainties concerning economic and social geography, demogeographics, and the geography of health.

Les données statistiques représentent l'une des sources majeures du discours géographique. La Chine dispose dans ce domaine d'une longue tradition, mais les statistiques publiées sont souvent peu satisfaisantes tant en quantité qu'en qualité. Cette étude montre d'abord que le territoire chinois a été depuis toujours mis au secret sur le plan statistique. Elle identifie ensuite les divers facteurs d'imprécision des statistiques en Chine : gigantisme du territoire et de la population, processus de transition, parti unique, enjeux géopolitiques. Une troisième partie détaille les incertitudes statistiques concernant la géographie économique et sociale, la démogéographie et la géographie de la santé.
