Le Caractère irlandais (an clô Gaelach) et la dynamique de l'âge d'or

Until the mid-fifties, most texts written in the Irish language were printed in the 'Irish' type (do Gaelach) which was derived from the early Midle-Ages semi uncial, whereas the 'Roman' type was used for English (or other) texts. This paper, tracing the Irish character back to its origin, shows that the choice of this insular type bears the stamp of Romanticism. It also suggests that although the Roman character was to win over 'clô Gaelach', that magnificent survival of the past, it yet has not killed the Irish language and that today one can even witness a romantic surge of defence for the cultural legacy.

Jusqu'au milieu du XXe siècle, la plupart des textes en gaélique étaient imprimés, non pas en caractères romains, mais en caractères irlandais, dérivés de la semi-onciale du haut Moyen-Age. Cet article, en retraçant le parcours du caractère irlandais depuis les origines montre que son emploi traduit, d'une certaine façon, des attitudes dont la plupart correspondent à un idéal romantique. Il suggère également que même si le romain l'emporta sur la graphie insulaire porteuse des richesses de l'Age d'Or, il n'a pas scellé pour autant la mort du gaélique pas plus qu'il n'a anéanti la défense romantique du patrimoine culturel.
