The aim of this article is to present the linguistic features of the Gaelic language (or Irish) and to highlight the specificity of this Celtic tongue, drawing occasional parallels mostly with French and English but also with other languages. The analysis considers spelling, phonetics, the verb, the noun phrase, the adverb, word order and the complex sentence. If the article is first destined to French speakers, whether they be linguists or not, with a scant or no knowledge of Irish, the Irish speaker will find here a testimony of the interest Irish raises abroad, and he might be pleased to see that the article ends on an optimistic note.

Cet article a pour objet de présenter les traits linguistiques du gaélique (ou irlandais) et de mettre en lumière les caractéristiques de cette langue celtique, en faisant ici et là des rapprochements le plus souvent avec l'anglais et le français, mais aussi avec d'autres langues. L'analyse aborde la graphie, l'aspect phonétique, le verbe, le groupe nominal, l'adverbe, la structure de la phrase. Si l'étude s'adresse plus particulièrement au francophone - linguiste ou non linguiste, ne connaissant que peu ou aucunement le gaélique -, il témoignera auprès de l'irlandophone de l'intérêt que suscite à l'étranger cette langue dont l'avenir, conclut l'article avec optimisme, ne semble pas compromis.
