Founded in the 1820s to fight against the doctrines of the classical economists, Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine took advantage of the famine in Ireland to give a rather unorthodox explanation of its causes and to advocate a return to a more humane type of economics inspired by paternalism and associated with protectionism whose advantage would be not only to bring back peace and prosperity to the island but also to supply a viable alternative to liberal capitalism in Britain itself.

Blackwood 's Edinburgh Magazine qui combattait l'économie politique classique depuis les années 1820 profita de la famine en Irlande non seulement pour donner une explication peu orthodoxe de ses causes, mais encore pour prôner un retour à une économie plus humaine de type paternaliste et protectionniste qui rétablirait le calme et la prospérité dans l'île tout en servant de contre-modèle au projet libéral en Grande-Bretagne même.
