Résumé En

After a brief geographic and historic description of the country of the Anno, Diana Rey-Hulman shows how the exploitation of gold-bearing deposits determined how the land was occupied : each political unit of the Anno comprises both the place from which power was exercised, and gold deposits — sometimes the same, sometimes separate. The productive unit is made up of a small family group of a man, his wife and a « son » (who can, if necessary, be a slave). The rules governing the distribution of the metal extracted benefit Chiefs of clan and of lineage but women, young people and even slaves are not excluded from the division : women, in particular, can obtain gold in exchange for karite nut, of which they control the harvesting and sale. Two products are obtained in exchange for Anno gold : in the south, guns, and in the north, slaves. Amongst the Anno who have emigrated to Sansanné-Mango, gold — which has lost its monetary function, in favour of cowries — is no longer the symbol of clan unity.
