Résumé En

The Ndenye gold-bearing deposits, fairly spread out, were worked by the Anyi from the time of their arrival in the first half of the XVIIIth century. The technical, religious, economic and legal aspects of gold production vary little from other parts of the Akan ensemble. On the other hand, the particular political situation of the Anyi-Ndenye — subordinated to the Ashanti and split up into several small States — seems responsible for the remarkable importance attached to the accumulation of gold. Far from being the object of vain hoarding and purely ostentatious, the possession of gold is indispensable for the survival of lineages, and is an asset of great importance in the competition for power.
