This article begins with a detailed ethnographic description of a specific ritual event, namely the ceremony of the investiture of the Tu'i Agaifo, the king of Alo (Futuna, Western Polynesia). The analysis of this ceremony offers a starting point for the study of the local political system, of the historical context in which it has arisen and of its transformation, especially in relation to Christianity. Treading a middle path between structuralism and constructivism, this article aims at making a contribution to the classic theme of Polynesian divine kingship. It also brings out the central role performed by traditional chiefs in Futuna as well as in other societies in contemporary Pacific qua mediators between local custom, the Church and colonial or post-colonial institutions.

Cet article débute par une description ethnographique détaillée d'un événement rituel, la cérémonie d'investiture du Tu'i Agaifo, roi d'Alo (Futuna, Polynésie occidentale). L'analyse de cette cérémonie fournit l'occasion pour une étude du système politique local, du contexte historique dont il est issu et de ses transformations, en relation au christianisme. En s'appuyant sur une perspective qui se situe entre structuralisme et constructivisme, l'auteur apporte une contribution originale au thème classique de la royauté divine polynésienne. Il met aussi en évidence le rôle central que les chefs traditionnels jouent à Futuna, comme dans beaucoup d'autres sociétés du Pacifique contemporain, en tant que médiateurs entre la coutume, l'Église et les institutions coloniales ou post-coloniales.
