The fight against the use of a grammatical metalanguage in primary schools seems to have been repeatedly stressed by official texts until the decree of 1910 which set the grammatical nomenclature. This decree was the outcome of a long series of compromises to which F. Brunot largely contributed. His ambition was to resist the persistent influence of the Grammaire générale of Port-Royal. For the first time, the decree gave a reference common both to primary and secondary education, and, from 1910 onwards, was to have a significant influence on grammar.

La lutte contre l'usage du métalangage grammatical semble être une constante des textes officiels, en particulier en direction de l'école primaire élémentaire, jusqu'à l'arrêté de 1910, fixant la nomenclature grammaticale. L'arrêté est le fruit d'un long travail de compromis. Ferdinand Brunot s'y est fortement impliqué, avec l'ambition de se soustraire à l'influence persistante de la Grammaire générale de Port- Royal. Il fournit pour la première fois une référence commune au primaire et au secondaire. Toute la grammaire scolaire à venir va en être marquée.
