The paper presents a semiotic analysis of how the zero sign works, by studying the case of a character in two ways fictional of a Russian novel by Tynianov, Lieutenant Kijé. Kijé did not exist ever ; he was engendered by a copist's writing mistake. On the basis of assumptions inspired by Jakobson, Barthes or even Chomsky, we demonstrate how a being that is nothing but a name without a referent can assume some consistence in opposition to the other protagonists of the narration. Kijé appears not only as a remarkable linguistic and novelistic object, but as the symbol of a bureaucratic and absurd State.

Nous présentons une analyse sémiotique du fonctionnement du signe zéro à propos d'un personnage doublement fictif d'un roman russe de Tynianov, Le Lieutenant Kijé. Kijé n'a jamais eu d'existence ; il est né d'une erreur d'écriture d'un copiste. Appliquant des principes inspirés par Jakobson, Barthes, voire Chomsky, nous montrons comment un être qui n'est qu'un nom sans réfèrent peut prendre une consistance par opposition aux autres actants du récit. Objet linguistique et romanesque remarquable, Kijé est aussi le symbole d'un état bureaucratique et absurde.
