L'analyse ethnométhodologique de la conversation doit se comprendre à partir de ses sources phénoménologiques, c'est-à-dire à partir de l'oeuvre d'Alfred Schütz. On examine successivement les concepts de la sociologie comprehensive chez Alfred Schütz, la transformation que l'ethnométhodologie leur fait subir, et comment ces transformations réintroduisent une dimension positiviste. Cette démarche a pour effet, en transférant du sujet à l'interaction sociale l'analyse de la constitution de Schütz, de faire perdre de vue l'existence d'appareils linguistiques et sociaux d'interprétation, au nom d'une théorie de la connaissance basée sur la transparence du factuel. On examine enfin de façon critique un exemple d'analyse conversationnelle dans un cadre institutionnel.
