Giancarli Pierre-Don - Functions of Code-switching in children bilingual in French and English. When a bilingual communicates with another bilingual speaking the same languages X and Y, they are likely to draw upon the resources of both their languages, which makes language contacts predictable. But in addition to the resources of each of his/her languages, the bilingual also has the possibility of alternating them, which is a type of contact called switching and defined here as a total changeover (both conscious and unimposed) due to a sequential activation of the linguistic systems corresponding to X and Y. Why do bilingual children switch ? This article addresses such a question.
