Colourful 17th century life : a painted Grenoble ceiling About 10 years ago the building at 10-12 Rue Chenoise, in Grenoble, was fully refurbished. The present article focuses on a remarkable ceiling with decorated joists, dating from the modem period and probably part of a reception room. Detailed examination of its main features and secondary décorative elements (overall layout, designs, materials, comparison with other similar works) provides a perfect illustration of some of the painted décorations of the 17th century. The relative simplicity of the building and associated ornamentation nevertheless prompt questions regarding its production : how does it fit into the relevant period ? what did the buildings occupants hope to achieve socially ? was the craftsman using out-dated methods ? There are several possible explanations, which throw light on the background of a relatively unusual work

L'ensemble bâti du 10-12 rue Chenoise à Grenoble a pu bénéficier d'une remise en état et d'une mise en valeur engagée il y a une dizaine d'années. C'est à un remarquable plafond à la française décoré, datant de l'époque moderne et ornant probablement une salle de réception, qu'est consacré cet article. L'étude détaillée de ses points forts et de ses décors secondaires (disposition, motifs, matériaux, rappel d'autres ouvrages) illustre parfaitement l'ampleur de certains décors peints du XVIIe siècle. La mise en perspective des références à des ouvrages savants avec la relative modestie du bâtiment et des ornements soulève néanmoins quelques paradoxes quant aux conditions de son élaboration : réalisation tardive, aspirations sociales de ses occupants, attachement d'un artisan à des savoir-faire anciens ? Plusieurs hypothèses sont envisageables, et permettent d'éclairer le contexte d'une réalisation somme toute assez rare.
