Résumé En Fr

Henriette Asséo, The Gypsies in the Balkans Gypsies form one of the principal minorities in the Balkans, representing up to 10% of the population in Romania. However, their ancient roots have been either ignored or contested. Since the end of the heydey of the Imperial Age and the growth of nationalisms based on •ethnic exclusivity”, they have been the victims of a violent ostracism. Current challenges to the old national order •in the West by the growth of the European Union, in the East by the end of the communist era and the sometimes violent modification of national boundaries— have recast •the Gypsy question” as a transnational problem. Through the operation of their organisations the Gypsies are now political actors, listened to by European institutions for the first time in their history. This new strategy of visibility, however, cannot stop a disturbing return to the arguments of the eugenicists of the interwar period.
