The transition from Franco’s regime to democracy took place within the context of a legality defined by the former regime. Democratic Spain has never in fact put this "legal” base in question. This is why, for a long time, Franco’s repression of his opponents has never been exposed. Only on 20 November 2002 did Parliament unanimously condamn the military coup d’État of 1936 and rehabilitate its victims. But, one year later, the annulment of sentences pronounced by Franco’s system of justice has not been obtained. The process of reviving historical memory is indeed very long.
