Italian doctors of medicine and thermal baths in the Middle Ages - From the first half of the 14th century onwards, Italian medical practitioners increasingly published treatises extolling the virtues of thermal springs in an effort to turn them into a new therapeutic instrument, transforming what was hitherto only a recreatio corporis into an instrument of preservatio or curatio sanitatis, while at the same time making indispensable the presence (or the advice) of the practitioner.

Les médecins italiens et le bain thermal au Moyen Âge. À partir de la première moitié du XIVe siècle, les médecins italiens multiplient les ouvrages sur les eaux thermales et tentent de faire du bain un nouvel instrument thérapeutique, transformant ce qui n'était encore qu'une recreatio corporis en un outil de conservatio, preservatio ou curatio sanitatis et rendant la présence (ou la parole) du praticien indispensable « au curiste ».
