Taking the waters in al-Andalus. Practice and frequentation of the hamma - Both mediaeval Arab sources and archaeological observations confirm the importance of the thermal bath (hamma) in al-Andalus and in North Africa. Their social and economic impact there was much more significant than in ancient Rome, contrary to what has often been stated.

Quoiqu'elles privilégient clairement l'information concernant le bain à fonction hygiénique (hammam) aux dépens du bain thermal (hamma), les sources médiévales arabes (tout comme l'observation archéologique) confirment l'intérêt qui fut porté à ce dernier en al-Andalus et au Maghreb. L'impact social et économique de celui-ci fut alors beaucoup plus important que dans l'Antiquité romaine, au contraire de ce qui a souvent été affirmé.
