Les carbonates continentaux ont été étudiés par des spécialistes différents (géochimistes, pédologues, sédimentologues, stratigraphes, biologistes, etc.), qui ont tous un vocabulaire particulier, ce qui rend difficile la lecture des publications et l'application à l'ancien. Il est proposé ici une description objective à partir de la lame mince, en utilisant très simplement les données de la pétrographie sédimentaire et de la micromorphologie des sols. Après une étude des constituants primordiaux (micrite et sparite), on passe aux grains, aux vides et à la texture, matrice et ciment, plasma et enduits. Ces divers éléments sont replacés dans leur milieu élémentaire deformation : submergé, pédologique, de surface (stromatolites désertiques). On aborde ensuite leur répartition dans les milieux continentaux réels : suintant, chenal, plaine d'inondation, lac et littoral lacustre, glacis, interfluve. En conclusion, la lame mince permet de déterminer ce qui revient à chacun des milieux élémentaires, la succession des événements, et les effets éventuels de la diagenèse tardive.
