The alluvial plain of the lower Argens progressively built up of sediment deposition at the end of the post-glacial advance. Several important archaeological sites like Les Escaravatiers and Forum Julii are found in this low valley. Our research sought to establish how these ancient settlements were established in relation to the alignment of the shoreline. A model integrating delta geometry and sedimentary process is proposed to reconstruct migration of the shoreline. The curve obtained enables one to know at any one time the position of the riverbank line. During protohistory, the riverbank line rapidly progressed downstream. At the peak occupation period of the Escaravatiers site to the sixth to fifth century BC transition period, the riverbank line is clearly downstream from the site and thus cannot explain the choice of the settlement site. Later, ca. 50 BC, the riverbank line was still somewhat upstream from Forum Julii when the city was founded. Maritime access then possible from the lower Agens perhaps explains the choice of its implantation. This study clearly shows that the sediment accumulation and silting up of the lower end of the valley forced modifications in the port installations.

La plaine alluviale du Bas Argens s'est constituée par remblaiement alluvial et progradation des terres à la fin de la transgression postglaciaire. Plusieurs sites archéologiques importants comme Les Escaravatiers et Forum Julii se trouvent dans cette basse vallée. On s'intéresse à l'implantation de ces sites en rapport avec la position de la ligne de rivage. Pour restituer la migration de la ligne de rivage, un modèle intégrant à la fois la géométrie du delta et les processus sédimentaires est proposé. La courbe obtenue permet de connaître à tout moment la position de la ligne de rivage. Durant la Protohistoire, la ligne de rivage progresse rapidement vers l'aval. Au moment de l'apogée du site des Escaravatiers, à la transition VIe-Ve siècle av. J.-C, le rivage est nettement en aval du site et ne peut expliquer le choix du lieu de son implantation. Plus tard, vers 50 av. J.-C, la ligne de rivage est encore un peu en amont de Forum Julii quand la cité est fondée. L'accès maritime alors possible par le Bas Argens explique peut-être le choix de l'implantation. On montre clairement que la progradation et l'ensablement de la très basse vallée obligent à modifier les installations portuaires.
