Guy Auboire et al., « Les ossements d'ours fossiles du Takouatz Guerrissène (Djurdjura, Algérie) », Publications du musée des Confluences (documents), ID : 10.3406/mhnly.1995.1144
Though remnants of bones were searched and found as far back as 1 6 years ago by the Rosny Speleo-Club, they have never been described. A description of the cavity and the speleo-genetic context made by P. Gillon. G. Auboire is now describing the bones brought to the surface, among which a brain-pan in perfect condition can be seen. The analysis of the descriptive and bio-metric pieces dated by 9620 BP Radiocarbone leads to think that the Takouatz specimen should rightly be placed between Ursus deningeri and Ursus spelaeus, a member of the Ursus arctos species, currently found in Northern Africa, and one of its very last representatives. This survey clearly shows how particular the evolution of these Ursidae fossils has been all over the area : both ar-chaïc and developed features can be found on the same specimen. This should give us a chance to evaluate the morphological variation of the arctos species, as well as similar species ; and this might lead to a general revision of the numerous subspecies already described .
