In this study, we will define through a triadic model various semiotic functions that can be applied in history and toponymy at the time of the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Nuevo Reino de Granada [ New Kingdom of Granada] in the sixteenth century. In particular, we will examine the functions of referential shift, substitution, degree-zero signification, degree-zero denotation and multidenotation. Other more complex designation processes will also be addressed, notably on one of the most important ethnolinguistic groups that lived in the heartland of this Kingdom, the Muisca Confederation.
