From 490 to 338, the art of commanding underwent considerable transformation. Between the end of the VI. c. and the Peloponnesian wars, in all the cities of the Greek world, were established or consolidated the various institutions that enabled the designation and control of the command. The Peloponnesian wars brought about a radical modification of the relationships that the generals entertained with their city. Fourth-century military innovations, the development of a mercenary corps, the introduction of a reflection on the manner of commanding, set, with even greater acuteness, the question of the existence of a twofold commanding entity, at once political and military.

De 490 à 338, les manières de commander se transformèrent considérablement. Entre la fin du VIe siècle et les guerres du Péloponnèse, dans toutes les cités du monde grec, furent mises en place ou consolidées diverses institutions permettant la désignation et le contrôle du commandement. Les guerres du Péloponnèse modifièrent, de façon radicale, les relations qu'entretenaient les généraux avec leur cité. Les innovations militaires du IVe siècle, le développement du mercenariat, l'introduction d'une réflexion sur les façons de commander , posèrent avec encore plus d'acuité, la question de l'existence d'un commandement à double qualification politique et militaire.
