Bei der Ausgrabung von Ambleny „ Le Soulier“ wurden außer zwei Gräbern der Frühlatènezeit, die auf eine gallische Nekropole im Westen des untersuchten Bereichs weisen, zahlreiche Siedlungsspuren aus dem 11. -13. Jahrhundert freigelegt. Die Strukturen – mehrheitlich eingetiefte Gebäude, Gruben und Silos – sind nach einem strukturieren Plan in einem Parzellennetz angeordnet, das durch parallele, in relativ gleichmäßigen Abständen angelegte Gräben gebildet wird. Obwohl die untersuchte Fläche nur einen begrenzten Einblick gewährt, bietet sich hier die seltene Gelegenheit, einen Teil eines Weilers oder Straßendorfes mit bandförmigen Parzellen freizulegen. Für diese Periode wird diese Siedlungsform, abgesehen von einigen bemerkenswerten Fällen, sowohl in der Picardie als auch im gesamten französischen Territorium in der Tat immer noch unterschätzt. Ambleny „ Le Soulier“ nährt also auf bezeichnende Weise die Problematik der Siedlungsgenese in den Regionen, deren Bewirtschaftung sich zwischen dem 11. und 13. Jahrhundert intensiviert.

Except for two graves ascribed to the Early La Tène period and showing the likely existence of a Gaulish cemetery on the West side of the area studied, the excavations at Ambleny “ Le Soulier” yielded a dense amount of remains related to a dwelling ascribed to the 11th-13th centuries. The remains are mostly bottoms of huts, pits and silos ; they are installed in a network of plots delimited by parallel and relatively equidistant ditches, following a structured framework. Even if the total surface excavated provides only a limited view, it gives a rare opportunity to investigate part of a hamlet or street-village with long narrow strip plots. As concerns this period indeed, except for a few notable cases, this kind of occupation, in Picardy as throughout the French territory, is still little known. Thus Ambleny “ Le Soulier” significantly informs the issues concerning the expansion of occupation on lands whose exploitation develops rapidly between the 11th and the 13th centuries.

Hormis la présence de deux sépultures, attribuées à La Tène ancienne et trahissant la présence probable d’une nécropole gauloise à l’ouest de la zone étudiée, la fouille d’Ambleny “ Le Soulier” a permis de mettre au jour une quantité dense de vestiges liés à une occupation de type domestique attribuée aux XIe-XIIIe siècles. Les structures -majoritairement des bâtiments excavés, des fosses aménagées et des silos -sont implantées au sein d’un réseau parcellaire constitué de fossés parallèles et relativement équidistants les uns des autres, selon un plan structuré. Si l’emprise de fouille offre une fenêtre restreinte, elle donne une occasion rare de mettre au jour une partie d’un hameau ou village-rue à parcelles laniérées. Pour cette période en effet, à l’exception de quelques cas remarquables, ce type d’occupation, tant en Picardie, que sur l’ensemble du territoire français, demeure méconnu. Ambleny “ Le Soulier” alimente ainsi, de manière significative, la problématique du développement d’habitats sur des terroirs dont l’exploitation s’intensifie entre le XIe et le XIIIe siècle.
