Le complexe domanial et artisanal de Saint-Bézard (Aspiran, Hérault) au début du Ier s. ap. J.-C. Fondation et genèse

The villa and potters'' workshop of Saint-Bézard, in Aspiran (Hérault) benefit, since the beginning of 1970s, from steady researches which allowed to loosen a surface of the 1,8 ha on 3,5 that counts the site. The latter is settled a few hundred meters away from the main road Cessero / Segodunum, on the alleged border between the cities of Lodève and Béziers. We first introduce the evolution of the researches, and show the chronological phasing for the beginning of Ist c. AD, and then consider the foundation circumstances of this large domain and the role played in its development by viticulture. The identity of the founder of this domain is then questioned through the analysis of the epigraphic mentions resulting from the instrumentum domesticum. Finally, a reflection is proposed on the status and the functions of Saint-Bézard.

La villa et l’atelier de potiers de Saint-Bézard à Aspiran (Hérault) bénéficient depuis le début des années 1970 de recherches soutenues qui ont permis de dégager une surface de 1,8 ha sur les 3,5 que compte le site. Celui-ci est installé à quelques centaines de mètres de la grande voie Cessero/ Segodunum, à la frontière supposée des cités de Lodève et Béziers. Après avoir présenté l’évolution des recherches et exposé le phasage chronologique pour le début du Ier s. ap. J.-C., on s’interroge sur les conditions de fondation de ce grand domaine et sur le rôle joué dans son développement par la viticulture. La question de l’identité du fondateur du complexe est ensuite abordée à travers l’analyse des diverses mentions épigraphiques provenant de l’instrumentum domesticum. Enfin, est proposée une réflexion sur le statut et les fonctions de Saint-Bézard.
