Résumé En Fr Nl

Thibault Jacobs, Guild Hospitals in Brussels ? New Insights in Charity in an Urban Context at the End of the Middle Ages The creation during the 14th century of the hospitals of Saint-James, Saint-Cornelius, Saint-Julian en Saint-Lawrence seems to have taken place in the same social background, namely the milieu of the craftsmen. The function of those four Brussels establishments, which until now have mistakenly been presented as pilgrims hospitals, cannot be restricted to the accommodation of the poor, which were relativey few. A closer look at the local context produces new insights. They were indeed founded during a crucial period for the Duchy of Brabant, in which those craftsmen were actively involved in political events. The urban, social and political insertion of these establishments closely resembled this involvement : it was both complicated and important. In this way, they functioned as gathering places for trade communities still under formation ; as places of protest for those social classes expressing numerous demands ; as places of charity offering both hospitality and credit ; as financial centres managing large amounts of goods, rents and credits ; as places embodying the centre of a neighbourhood. In this context, these hospitals contributed to the expression of solidarity towards the group and to the development of common values and identities for those craftsmen.

Ambachtsgasthuizen in Brussel ?
