M. Sanders’ Way. Jacobite exiles in the Southern Netherlands. The purpose of this article is to give a first approach of the presence and the activities of Jacobite exiles from England, Scotland and Ireland in the Southern Netherlands at the end of the 17th century and during the 18th century. Jacobite presence in countries like France or Russia has been thoroughly studied ; it isn’t the case for the Southern Netherlands. Nevertheless, there was a relevant Jacobite scene till far in the 18th century, with even recrudescent activity during the decay of Jacobite activism. It is more difficult to appreciate the role of Jacobite exiles in economic life. Although the creation of the Ostend Company can surely be seen as an element of a Jacobite agenda, it would be exaggerated to state that this was the case. Religious life of exiles from the British Isles, seem to reflect the large diversity about political realities according the country of origin.

Cet article tend à décrire la présence et l’activité aux Pays-Bas méridionaux d’exilés jacobites en provenance d’Angleterre, d’Écosse et d’Irlande pendant les dernières décennies du XVIIe et le XVIIIe siècle. La présence des jacobites dans des pays aussi différents que la France ou la Russie a déjà fait l’objet d’études approfondies, ce qui n’est pas le cas pour les Pays-Bas méridionaux. Ceci n’empêche pas qu’il est possible de constater la présence d’une scène jacobite d’une certaine importance et ceci bien loin dans le XVIIIe siècle. On constate même un regain d’activités au moment où l’activisme jacobite perd de ses forces. Le rôle des jacobites dans la vie économique n’est pas univoque. Il est évident que la création de la Compagnie d’Ostende répondait aux attentes des jacobites, mais cela n’implique pas qu’il y ait eu un lien étroit entre les deux dans l’ordre des faits. En ce qui concerne la vie religieuse des exilés en provenance des îles britanniques, il s’avère que la diversité d’opinions et de sensibilités concernant la réalité politique du pays de provenance était aussi réelle que large.

M. Sanders’ogpunt. De jacobitische diaspora in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Deze bijdrage schetst de aanwezigheid en de activiteit van jacobitische ballingen uit Engeland, Schotland en Ierland, in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, gedurende de late zeventiende en de achttiende eeuw. Hoewel de aanwezigheid van Jacobieten in landen zoals Frankrijk en Rusland grondig werd onderzocht, was dit nog niet het geval voor de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Toch blijkt er sprake te zijn van een relevante jacobitische scène, en dit tot ver in de achttiende eeuw, met zelfs een heropflakkering van activiteit tijdens de vervalperiode van het jacobitische activisme. De rol van de Jacobieten in de economie blijkt minder eenduidig te zijn. Weliswaar pastte de oprichting van de Oostendse Compagnie in de agenda van de Jacobieten, maar het zou te ver gaan een sterke band tussen beide te poneren. Ook in het religieuze leven van ballingen uit de Britse Eilanden blijkt er ruimte te zijn geweest voor diverse gevoeligheden overeenkomstig de politieke realiteit van het land van herkomst.
