L’exhibitionniste estropié de Saint-Jean de Boí (XIIe siècle)

Many elements of the rich iconographic program inside the Church of St. John of Boí, in the Catalan Pyrenees, are preserved. A bestiary nicely pictures a world where the closest meets with the most distant and unknown. Among those images, a male character catches attention not only because of his left leg, amputated, extended with a peculiar wooden prosthesis, but, especially, because the man ostensibly shows off his penis without the slightest embarrassment, targeting it with one or two hands in the direction of the main nave of the church. In this article we try to understand and interpret this character.

De nombreux éléments du riche programme iconographique qui se déployait à l’intérieur de l’église de Saint-Jean de Boí, dans les Pyrénées catalanes, sont conservés. Un bestiaire offre une belle image du monde dans laquelle on trouve réunis aussi bien l’univers le plus proche que celui plus lointain, inconnu. À l’intérieur de ces images, un personnage masculin attire l’attention parce que, d’une part, sa jambe gauche, amputée, est portée par un curieux élément de prothèse en bois et que, d’autre part, l’homme exhibe ostensiblement son sexe qu’il tient avec une ou deux mains en direction de la nef principale de l’église sans que son visage dénote le moindre embarras. Dans cet article on essaye de comprendre et d’interpréter ce personnage.

Veel elementen van de rijke iconografie van de Sint-Jans kerk van Boí, in de Catalaanse Pyreneeën, zijn bewaard gebleven. O. a. een bestiarium dat het bekendste maar ook het meest exotische, en onbekende, van de wereld weerspiegelt. Tussen al deze afbeeldingen valt een mannelijk personage het meest op, niet zozeer omwille van zijn geamputeerde linkerbeen, verlengd met een eigenaardige houten prothese, maar wel omdat deze man duidelijk zijn penis ten toon stelt zonder de minste schaamte : hij houdt hem zelfs met een of twee handen in de richting van het schip van de kerk. In dit artikel proberen we deze personage te begrijpen en te interpreteren.
