Résumé En Fr Nl

Thérouanne is well known as a capital city in antiquity and a powerful bishopric city since the early Middle Ages ; it’s however mainly renowned because of its tragic end in 1553, when the victory of Charles v led to its radical destruction and total disappearance. This article focuses on the genesis, location and evolution of city fortifications deemed impregnable from antiquity to their demise. Taking advantage of the results of recent preventive excavations as well as of ancient programmed ones, by exploring archival sources and ancient figurative documents and via schematic drawings, the article tries to locate gates and portions of walls and attempts to imagine performed works, used materials as well the overall impact of the city fortifications on urban life.
