Fictive Past and Modern Propaganda: The Reversal of Candidus’ Biblical Archaiologia in the Age of the Anastasius

This article aims to show that genealogies and foundations were a crucial tool in Late Antiquity in order to build the identity of a people. They were also used to develop political strategies and propaganda in order to support an emperor or to damage his memory. As to display how these strategies worked, we will consider a case-study offered by the historian Candidus : he is the author of a History of the Empire, containing an Archaeology of the Isaurians, that helped to forge the identity of this people. This study will show how this Archaeology lead to the construction of an ethnic consciousness, but it was later overthrown by Late ancient and Byzantine sources (as Procopius of Gaza, the Logothetenchronik, etc.), as to promote a negative image of the emperor Zeno and the Amorian dynasty. It follows that the rediscovery and the manipulation of the mythical past played a prominent role on the political scene during Late Antiquity and Byzantine era.

La présente contribution poursuit l’objectif de montrer que les généalogies et les récits de fondation constituaient, dans l’Antiquité tardive, des instruments incontournables pour la construction de l’identité d’un peuple. Ces instruments contribuaient également à développer des stratégies politiques et de propagande, dans le but de soutenir un empereur ou d’attaquer sa mémoire. Le fonctionnement de ces stratégies sera illustré par le biais d’un cas d’étude, offert par l’historien Candide : celui-ci fut l’auteur d’une Histoire de l’Empire, contenant une Archéologie des Isauriens, qui contribua à façonner l’identité de ce peuple. Notre enquête nous amènera à découvrir comment cette Archéologie fonda une conscience ethnique, pour être ensuite bouleversée par les sources tardives et byzantines (comme Procope de Gaza, la Chronique du Logothète, etc.) : celles-ci créèrent, à partir de cette même Archéologie, une propagande négative au détriment de l’empereur Zénon et des souverains de la dynastie amorienne. Il s’en suit que la redécouverte et la manipulation du passé mythique jouèrent un rôle de premier plan sur la scène politique de l’époque tardive et byzantine.

Deze bijdrage poogt te tonen dat genealogieën en stichtingsverhalen cruciale werktuigen waren voor de creatie van de identiteit van een volk. Deze hulpmiddelen werden tevens gebruikt voor de ontwikkeling van politieke strategieën en propaganda ten bate van een keizer of om diens nalatenschap te schaden. Een casus uit het werk van de historicus Candidus zal deze strategieën illustreren. Deze auteur schreef een Geschiedenis van het Rijk, met een Archeologie van de Isauriërs die de identiteit van dit volk vorm gaf. Deze analyse zal tonen dat deze Archeologie bijdroeg tot de constructie van een vorm van etnisch bewustzijn, die in latere laat-antieke en Byzantijnse bronnen (zoals in Procopius van Gaza, de Logothetenkroniek, enz.) echter echter werd geperverteerd om een negatief beeld van keizer Zeno en de Amorische dynastie te promoten. De herontdekking en manipulatie van het mythische verleden speelde aldus een prominente rol in de politiek van de late oudheid en de byzantijnse periode.
