In the middle of the 11th century, the Ardennes and its immediate surroundings, on the borders of the kingdoms of Germany and France, was the subject of an major dispute between, on the one hand, Godfrey the Bearded, duke of Lothringia, and his allies and, on the other hand, the Emperor Henry iii and his Imperial Church (Liège, Utrecht, Metz). This episode in the peculiar history of Lothringia remains mostly unknown ; apart from its political aspects, its is crucial for military (establishment of fortresses) and economic (markets and minting of money) dimensions, but also central to the road network, relevant of the power of local people, and with a direct impact on the cult of relics.

Au milieu du XIe siècle, le massif ardennais et ses alentours immédiats, aux confins des royaumes de Germanie et de France, fut l’objet d’un formidable enjeu entre, d’une part, le duc de Lotharingie Godefroid le Barbu et ses alliés et, d’autre part, l’empereur Henri III et son Église impériale (Liège, Utrecht, Metz). Cet épisode mal connu dans l’histoire du «particularisme » lotharingien concerne, en dehors de ses aspects politiques, les domaines militaires (implantation de forteresses) et économiques (marchés et frappe de la monnaie), la configuration du réseau routier, le poids des masses populaires et même le culte des reliques.

In het midden van de elfde eeuw betekende het Ardennengebied en onmiddellijke omgeving, aan de grenzen van de koninkrijken Duitsland en Frankrijk, een formidabele uitdaging tussen enerzijds de hertog van Lotharingen, Godfried met den Baard, en zijn bondgenoten en, aan de andere kant, Keizer Hendrik iii en zijn Keizerlijke Kerk (Luik, Utrecht, Metz).
