Frank A. Kafker: The Eighteenth-Century Translations of the Encyclopédie: How Influential Were They?. This article discusses the eighteenth-century translations of the Encyclopédie, especially those in English, Italian, and Russian, and concludes that there was no even remotely adequate translation in any language. The article then proposes various explanations for this and argues that the most important reason was the lack of enough interested readers who could not read the original in French. Among a non-Francophone audience, even when the Encyclopédie's sales price was kept low by publishing it in installments or a few articles at a time, it had very limited appeal. Therefore, if one wants to search for the influence of the Encyclopédie in Europe, one should study the various French editions and anthologies and not the translations.
