Work is often defined as the meeting point of singular and general dimensions the subject is faced with to carry out his or her activity. Starting from the description of a work situation and face to face interviews led with the working women involved in it, the author tries to define the organization of the action and, particularly to specify the role played by perception and interpretation. This allows to think that if the action is situated, the activity is situating in so far as it provides the characterization and interpretation of situations which are necessary to act. These elements are not only linked with what defines these working women’s skills but also with the dimension of a “ lifestyle” at work which their skills cannot be separated from.

Le travail est fréquemment présenté comme l’articulation de dimensions singulières et générales auxquelles le sujet se confronte pour construire son activité. À partir de la présentation d’une situation industrielle et d’entretiens en auto-confrontation conduits avec les opératrices y intervenant, on s’attache à définir l’organisation de l’action et à préciser le rôle de la perception et de l’interprétation dans celle-ci. Ceci permet d’envisager que si l’action est située, l’activité est situante en ce qu’elle fournit cette caractérisation et interprétation des situations, nécessaire pour agir. Ces éléments sont reliés non seulement à ce qui définit la compétence de ces opératrices mais aussi avec la dimension d’un «art de vivre » au travail dont elle est inséparable.
