Résumé En Fr

For the word ἀφίκτωρ, nearly a hapax legomenon, which occurs but twice in Aeschylus' Suppliants, two meanings are usually assumed, following the scholiast : as an epithet of Zeus, at I. 1, it would mean « protector of suppliants », whereas at 1. 241, the plural would refer to « suppliants » in general. Avoiding the unitary solution according to which Zeus himself should be a suppliant, the present study offers a new interpretation, where both the preverb and the suffix of nomen agentis make sense. In inscriptions from Cyrene and Lindos, a verb άφικετεύω « to take out of supplication, to settle (back) into a community » occurs both in active and passive voice, whereas in Cnidos the corresponding ritual is described as αφικετεια, Therefore, Zeus is here the god « who settles suppliants back into a community » (1. 1) and the plural form in 1. 241 refers to him and to all other θεοί άγώνιοι who will take part into that réintégration. Aeschylus
