Between the 12th and 15th August 1942, more than 10. 000 young Catholics, most of them belonging to the Scouts of France, met at the foot of Notre-Dame de France. Situated at the confluence of the Roads followed by pilgrims over the previous weeks, « le Puy » was meant to be a symbol of expiation, hope and unity for a people which wanted to stand proud once again. It is difficult now to comprehend this event. One ha to get beyond the image of a « holy union » wished for by the organisers, and the subsequent image of a « scandalous collaboration » between the Church and the State. If there was something misguided in it, it would be the exclusive emphasis on moral teaching to the detriment of political lucidity : « a perfect society is born of saints and heroes ». If there was a sin to be denounced, then it was that the defence of the Church's interests took priority over the defence of human rights. Christians beleave that since the Incarnation, the hommage given to a transcendant God should never be opposed to the duty of helping a human being.

Entre le 12 et le 15 août 1942, plus de 10.000 jeunes catholiques, pour la plupart des Scouts de France, se sont rassemblés aux pieds de Notre-Dame de France. Au croisement des Routes commencées quelques semaines plus tôt par les pèlerins, « Le Puy » devait traduire à la fois l'expiation, l'espérance et l'unité d'un peuple qui voulait se redresser. L'interprétation de l'événement se révèle difficile. Il faut dépasser l'image d'une « union sacrée » souhaitée par les animateurs, et celle de « compromission scandaleuse » de l'Église et de l'État, saisie après coup. Si illusion il y a, elle réside dans l'exclusivité donnée à la formation morale au détriment de la lucidité politique : « une société parfaite naît de saints et de héros ». Si faute a été dénoncée, c'est lorsque la défense des intérêts de l'Église a pu prévaloir sur la défense des droits de tout homme : depuis l'Incarnation, disent les chrétiens, jamais l'hommage rendu au Dieu transcendant ne peut aller à l'encontre de l'aide à apporter à la personne humains;
