Résumé En Fr

The danger of voices and the power of tears : female mourning in Ancient Rome Mourning can either marginalise or valorise women. Certain philosophers in Ancient Rome marginalised women's social identity by underestimating the importance of their mourning rites. Women in mourning presented death in the family as a loss for the city, thus rousing competition between families and inciting revenge if there had been a murder. It was for this reason that the city restricted their mourning in public. During their ritual supplications and peplophoria, however, the matrons intervened, by way of their tears and their gestures of mourning, in the most critical of situations in the city thus acquiring an alternative form of political power.
